Naming Your Season (Warm Weather Edition)

This is Part 2. Part 1 can be found here

Ya’ll, it has been a journey lately.  And by lately, I mean the past several months.  And years.  Last week I finally got at least one answer.  That answer includes learning that it is indeed difficult for me to go up and down the stairs.  I have a doctor’s note and everything.  There’s not much I can do about the fact that my bedroom is upstairs and laundry room is downstairs, but what I can do is restructure which clothes I have in active rotation to reduce the number of trips up and down the stairs I need to take.  It was honestly an emotional process trying to decide what to keep out and what to pack away.  Sometimes a new season brings growth, and sometimes it comes with loss.  Sometimes it is a mix of both.

Naming My Season

So what season am I in?  I’m in a season of essentializing.  Of needing to wear clothes that will help keep my skin covered and my body cool at the same time.   Of needing to have the easiest outfits to assemble as I possibly can that require a minimum amount of faff while still letting me feel like me.  Would it be nice if I was in a season where I could just live in cute shorts and tank tops all summer long?  Yes, but that’s not my reality right now, and radically accepting the season that I’m in, and making the necessary accommodations will ultimately serve me much better, and free me up to have more peace of mind, and more bandwidth for other passions.

mid way through: some clothing has made it on to racks. A list is being made. Clothes are on a drying rack.

Do I wish I could have more clothes to choose from on a regular basis?  Yes.  But that desire is far outweighed by the freedom and empowerment that I experienced when I washed all of the clothes that were dirty that were on my “keep” list, AND I was able to do it all in one trip, AND hang all the items that needed to dry on a rack without expending all of my turtles/spoons/energy.  And this morning?  I was able to put all the dry clothes on hangers without needing to lie down afterwards.  And it felt so great.

Now it’s your turn

What season are you in?  Are you going camping every other weekend?  Living at the pool?  Remodeling a house?  Chasing toddlers?  Breastfeeding and getting spit up on regularly?  Maybe you’re about to go off to college or moving into a smaller apartment and you won’t have as much closet space as you did before?  Making a career change and now you need to dress smarter or more laid back or now you get to wear a uniform every day?

Is being able to throw everything in the washer together and dryer together a priority?  Keep that in mind when looking at what material things are made of!  I LOVE me some rayon/modal/viscose, but they will shrink up like nobody’s business if they go in the dryer at too high a heat or for too long even on a low heat.   Pre-shrunk cotton-poly blends may be your friend if you’re looking for lower maintenance.

Have the time/energy/space for air drying more of your clothes?  By all means, join me on team linen and team rayon.

No matter what your season or which team you’re on, I’d love to hear from you! If any of this resonated, please email me and tell me about it! If you’re not in a season to dive head first into a massive overhaul, but you might be ready to wade in from the shallow end with some weekly and monthly accountability and encouragment, sign up for my email list (at the bottom of the page) to get all the updates!
